i find myself in awe, trying to find some info, about the murphys, this is the first website ive looked into. and the history, of the murphys, my father, was a michael f. murphy, my fathers bro, was a francis murphy, i know these are popular names, but listening to the history, and stories, kind of makes my heart beat. im trying to learn as much as i can kinda on my own thanks for the down time heatherpie!
very cool. My grandmothers great uncle Lt Edward Murphy fought in the civil war. He lost an arm in gettysburg. he was part of the honor guard that escorted lincoln from wash dc to springfield IL. For that he received the MoH, which I have.
JamesMurphy: Thank you so much! I do have a copy of the marriage certificate, which lists only John Murphy Jones and his father as the same (probably not). I will try to get more info from the London General Registry!
Don't forget my father, William Austin Murphy, a fall-down drunk who spent his last twenty-six years on the Bowery.
Dear krissangel, in regard to discovering your grandfather's roots in Ireland, you most likely will have to start at the General Registry Office, in London, since that is where he registered under the name Jones. The office would have asked him for a birth place.
I found it interesting and helpful regarding research I am conducting for a book on the Murphy and Nicholson clans. The latter was my mother's maiden name. Just one point of correction: You refer to William Murphy of Independent Newspapers receiving a knighthood from George V11.This would have been impossible, since there has never been a George V11. You surely meant to write Edward V11 or possibly George V.
Ms Clarke did not finish her research. Frank Murphy, born in Harbor Springs, MI, of immigrant parents became Governor of MI, U.S. Attorney General(Roosevelt admin),and Supreme Court Justice. He championed the rights of the people, calling in the national guard of Michigan to protect GM protesters who wanted to unionize in Flint, MI. This noble and courageous man is overlooked not only in Michigan, but also it now seems, by his ancestral countrymen. Please set the record straight. He certainly deserves more than a slight for his devotion and dedication in public service.
Ms. Clarke: In your next update, please consider including mention of Cork-born antiquarian Reverend Denis J. Murphy, S.J. who translated into English Lughaidh O Cleirigh's "Life of Red Hugh O'Donnell" circa 1625-30.
My great-grandfather was John J. Murphy. He later changed his name to Jones to please his English Fiancee. I'm trying to find out where in Ireland he was born in 1843/1844...he married in Kent, England in 1869 and emigrated to Brooklyn, NY the same year. He was the superintendent of construction (masonry) for the Corcoran Art Building in Washington, DC in 1873...any help would be appreciated! He died in Brooklyn on Oct. 22, 1911. Kris Drake
Very interesting, my Mother-in-law's maiden name was Murphy.
