The luck of the Irish is a common refrain, but how lucky really are we? Not so much says our writer Paul Kavanagh.
Here’s his opinion. What do you think?
1. Ireland has among the highest rate of depression in Europe according to the experts
2. Ireland has more wet weather than almost any other country in the world
3. The Irish Famine when one million died and one million fled
4. Jedward --and they just got their own TV show
5. Northern Irish troubles killed over 3,000 people
6. Daniel O’Donnell’s music
7. Worst political leadership in the world over the past ten years
8 “If we didn’t have bad luck we’d have no luck" - Brendan Behan
9. "If we kept ducks they’d drown” - various Irish writers
10. "If you had the luck of the Irish / You'd be sorry and wish you were dead / You should have the luck of the Irish / And you'd wish you was English instead!" - John Lennon

sirpeter: you 'ment'/'then'...would you like to explain...?Second thoughts don't bother...If you are going to be insulting it's probabaly best to get the spelling right dummy...My comment was not directed to you so if you dont want to be vicariously offended don't read other peoples online conversations...'I can see her big fat face mouthing at the keyboard...Haughty and Hostile and thicker than her fat ass is what this witch is I think I'll have some fun with this trailer trash' That's clearly a threat...You don't know what I look like or anything about me...Are you delusional...?Do you have a problem with women being smarter than you...Actually I think a single cell organism would be smarter than you...You are obviously stalking/harassing me around these message boards so I will now have to act on the report made to the Garda and make a formal complaint about your bizarre behaviour...! You had your chawnce...!
sirpeter | Aug 09, 2011, 08:26 AM EDT
I ment 3&5 for those who are pedantic.
sirpeter | Aug 09, 2011, 06:59 AM EDT
Paul Kavanagh you are an idiot.Your use of the word experts is a bit vague isn't it?According to the World Health Organization (WHO)France and the U.S.A have the highest rate of depression in the world.21 percent of people in France and 19.2 percent of people in the U.S.A As for the benign Irish weather been a little wet, only a fool would not consider that GOOD luck when you consider the extremes and destruction it causes in MOST parts of the world.Number 3&4 is a damned insult on every Irish person to class it as unlucky and to place these tragic events along with frivolous music acts. Are you trying to be funny? Would Americans and their murdered loved ones like to see 9/11 placed in your stupid list.Or classing American soldiers who are dying at this very moment as unlucky. You are a staff writer on IC.I am not amused and the Irish were NEVER happy go lucky. That's the portrayal of Hollywood movie bulls*it.
sirpeter | Aug 09, 2011, 05:42 AM EDT
@themurphia.Quote"Clearly Irish people need to learn how to construct arguments without resorting to personal insults"Unquote.Clearly YOU need to construct personal insults without resorting to insulting ALL the Irish people.I can almost see your big fat ugly face mouthing away at the keyboard.Haughty & Hostile and thicker then her fat ass is what this witch is.I think I'll have some fun with this trailer trash.
peterson | Aug 08, 2011, 08:25 PM EDT
No country could pass that test !!!
themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 05:00 PM EDT
What a sad man...You don't have *productive* conversations with any one...you just make condescending comments about the quality of their contributions...Why would I want to have a 'conversation' with you...?Your only interest as here is having the last word...I agreed with you on the Irish language but only after you had got other contributors backs up with your superior confrontational responses to their comments...I don't know why you've got a bee in your bonnet about what I write or what right you think you have to call me a hypocrite...Clearly Irish people need to learn how to construct arguments without resorting to personal insults...it seems to be a common trait...Yes I'm sure IC would be interested to hear your views on how it could *improve* if you expressed them in a less haughty hostile way...Btw if there was an HMQ site I would not dream of reading it...!
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 04:02 PM EDT
You are a hypocrite. I only directed my comments to you when you failed to understand what my criticism was about; it’s hilarious that you STILL don’t get it. Now it is best that we wrap this up and hopefully we can have a more productive conversation on another topic. After all you have agreed with my comments previously. Finally, I think you’re under the impression that I have a blog or something; I can assure you that I don’t. I like the idea of Irish Central, there are things that they do very well, however there are also things they don’t. I want them to improve those things so that it is a website worthy to bear the title ‘Irish Central’.
themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 03:17 PM EDT
I've read your posts...you really could bore for Ireland...You are clearly not happy with this site so why read it...?Simples...!I think you need to address your comments about the content of IC to the Editor not me...you may even know him...?I'm sure he would be happy to listen to your...ahem... constructive criticism...I have said why I like this site it does not require contributers to be sychophants and Oh yeah and I like the IC eye candy...!other than that I am not going to repeat myself...I have no desire to continue this converstion we don't see eye to eye I can live with that...!That's a wrap...!Byeeee!
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 12:53 PM EDT
You say that ‘this site is aimed at the Diaspora...it is not an Irish paper...it therefore has a wide range of topics items covering a variety of issues..?’ You’re right themurphia, it ranges from bad Irish news to US news to ‘How To Swear With An Irish Accent’. Clearly you are happy that an Irish website publishes so much nonsense about the Irish, and so often. It is very funny, because if for example ‘HM the Queen’s website’ published an article like ‘how to swear with an Irish accent’, IC would be quick to criticize it. Now a joke is a joke, however when articles like that are pushed to the fore and news of Irish achievements are sidelined and hardly covered, that is ridiculous. You don’t agree with me and that’s fine, but please don’t resort to name calling. Dearc ort féin.
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 12:28 PM EDT
Are you serious? Norris had ended his campaign before the Moytirra Vent field story, so how on earth could it distract from the Norris story? Many of the articles on IC regarding the demise of Norris’s campaign were taken from Irish newspaper websites including the Irish Times; a paper you seem to have an unusual dislike for.
themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 11:36 AM EDT
This site is aimed at the Diaspora...it is not an Irish paper...it therefore has a wide range of topics items covering a variety of issues serious and not so serious...I would have thought Dorrisgate was of interest to the Irish people but it wasn't mentioned in the National paper of record until IC broke it...Perhaps the 'discovery' was an opportunity to distract attention form the real story...?So put your own house/style in order before giving out about an online paper where a disparity of views are welcome not just those that suck up to the blog bullies...Let's leave it at that...!
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 09:08 AM EDT
Yes themurphia, it was A news story but it was not put to the fore as a MAIN story. Furthermore, if you read my comments on the article that was posted you will see how much IC missed; they didn’t even post pictures of the find even though plenty were on the internet. Furthermore, you will note that many posters agreed that IC had missed the importance of the story. Irish Central has written so many negative (often misleading articles) about Ireland one would have thought they would jump at the chance to balance them with some genuinely positive news; news that all Irish people could be proud of –but it didn’t. Instead IC seems to try and balance the bad news stories with nonsense like the above; or repeat articles; or news from the US.
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 09:07 AM EDT
You're right, you don't need to be a 'licka*se to have your comments published'...or indeed to have good manners.
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 08:37 AM EDT
Oh dear, you still couldn’t answer the question. Yes themurphia it was A news story but it was not put to the fore as a MAIN story. Furthermore, if you read my comments on the article that was posted you will see how much IC missed; they didn’t even post pictures of the find even though plenty were on the internet. Furthermore, you will note that many posters agreed that IC had missed the importance of the story. themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 08:15 AM EDT
The other thing I like about IC is that you dont have to be a licka*se to have your comments published...!
themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 08:11 AM EDT
Not only do you KNOW the discovery was an item on the NEWS blogs YOU actually commented on the topic...Having a little problem with the memory...?!
themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 08:05 AM EDT
The discovery in the Atlantic WAS a main NEWS story... Can't you read...?So your question is otiose? Now YOU answer...where your and your fellow travellers reports on Dorrisgate..? Oh you didn't write any...!No wonder Irish Politics is so rotten when no-one is prepared to hold anyone to account...It takes a Law (natch) graduate and an online journalist to do it...well the cat's well and truly out of the bag...Perhaps you should stick with National Geographic you obviously think you are too good for the hoi polloi on this site...That's all I've got to say on this topic...
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 07:38 AM EDT
Do you believe the above article (oh just to keep you happy -list) deserves to be a main story instead of the story about Ireland's discovery in the Atlantic? It is a very simple question and yet you seem incapable of answering it.
themurphia | Aug 08, 2011, 07:13 AM EDT
This is not an ARTICLE as someone with your pedantic tendencies should know...it is a LIST...that is why it is numbered...It is a bit of light hearted nonsense which people enjoy as a bit of frivolous diversion...IC wrote about the discovery to which you refer to in the NEWS pages this is the ROOTS blog...Where were your articles about one of the biggest Election calamities/near misses in the history of the Irish State...keeping a low profile on that were you...IC is to be congratulated and Danny Boy (sigh) in particular for breaking the Bloggergate story...apologies to Carl Berstein who I know reads my every word! Unlike the mainstream Irish Politics journalists...who shied away from it for fear of 'upsetting the apple tart'...I wouldn't like to see what you'd write about a site you didn't like...since you never stop *moaning* about IC...If you mean make IC more like the IT then NO I wouldn't like to see it 'better'...I like the commenters on this site the regular change of topics lack of intrusive moderation and the immediate publication of comments that keeps the 'conversation' going...So if you don't mind let those who take these little lists at face value and laugh at the good of them enjoy them without your constant whingeing...there are plenty of 'serious' comment boards on this site...!
kinvara7 | Aug 08, 2011, 06:13 AM EDT
Tóg go socair é themurphia! (take it easy). As I recall you agreed with my crticism regarding IC's 'house style' regarding the use of the word Taoiseach. I spoke in Irish because it didn't matter what language I wrote in; I hope you enjoyed it. I dont think you understand my criticism of IC. I like the website, in general, however I want it to be better. It's a very simple question themurphia: Do you believe the above article deserves to be a main article instead of the news about Ireland's discovery in the Atlantic?
themurphia | Aug 07, 2011, 04:54 PM EDT
I understand Ireland is under represented in the 2012 Olympics... Perhaps the IT could field a team to Bore for Ireland Gold Silver and Bronze...Kinvara Towngate sirpeter...in no particular order!
themurphia | Aug 07, 2011, 01:51 PM EDT
The above is not an 'article' it is a list...an amusing and lighthearted diversion...I find it charming in a daft sort of way...as obviously do others who get that it is not a weighty matter of 'news'...It is obviously not to your taste so why bother reading it...or this site for that matter...you are always moaning about the housestyle or the quality of the articles or the contributors... Unlike you most of the the contributors to this site enjoy reading the articles and comment/ing...I expect your comments in Irish are uncomplimentary so I won't bother translating...What sort of excuses for 'men' behave like you and your cronies writing snide whingey comments... Talking of dull articles maybe you should spend more time on your own blog which has suddenly died a death...
kinvara7 | Aug 07, 2011, 05:50 AM EDT
themurphia: Go bhfóire Dia ar do Chiall! Ní dhlífinn a mhalairt díot. Clearly you think the above article displays effort and is worthy of publication on IC. It is also clear that you believe that this article deserves to be a main article while the news of the Celtic Explorer expedition (the discovery of a large vent field, that has now been named Moytirra by the Irishmen who discovered it; the discovery of probably three new species etc.) does not. That's not news as far as you or 'Irish' Central is concerned. Pointe amháin eile, duirt tú: 'you never stop moaning'...? An amhlaidh nach dtuigeann tú mé? Is fuar an scéal anois é...Dearc ort féin.
clevelander | Aug 06, 2011, 11:29 PM EDT
@BippyBellito I am Happy for you and your family and wish you and yours the best. But how about all the other Irish who did not have the option of deportation. Not everyone had the fare. Many Died by hunger, many died by the crown, many died trying to feed there Children. Your Family got lucky. Millions of other Irish Died without the "LUCK OF THE IRISH". It is not just a saying. It is wrong!
seamusdenais | Aug 06, 2011, 06:40 PM EDT
I'm Seamus De Nais. Luckiest Irishman in the world. Have a beautiful wife who loves me and no mortgage. How lucky is that my fellow Irish Americans!!
seamusdenais | Aug 06, 2011, 06:33 PM EDT
I shall beam the luck of the Irish to America right now. Here's the rainbow!!
themurphia | Aug 06, 2011, 06:12 PM EDT
kinvara: this online paper is clearly not lofty enough for you why d you read it you never stop moaning...stick with the Irish Times...at least IC had the honesty to deal with the Norris debacle..!
Pittsburghkid | Aug 06, 2011, 04:26 PM EDT
If it weren't for bad luck the Irish would rule the world. God has to dispense bad luck as well as good luck. God chose the strong Irish for the bad luck. Bad luck makes us stronger. Gods made me stronger, because of the bad luck. I rather be strong then luck.
belcarra | Aug 06, 2011, 04:14 PM EDT
Every time I hear Danniel O'Donnell , I puke.
LilPaddy | Aug 06, 2011, 02:54 PM EDT
OUR LUCK IS ABOUT AS TRUE AS THE "WOULD BE" SHAMROCK....OOPS! "CLOVER" IN THE LEADIN.... Nials head up his arse again...
BippyBellito | Aug 06, 2011, 01:30 PM EDT
My grandfather too was a Fitzpatrick. He DID believe in the Luck of the Irish and credited his coming to America as proof. He served honorably in WWI as a very young man in The Fighting 69th, one of the greatest fighting forces of its day. Luck is perception. I share my grandfather's proud Irish heritage and will take that luck over many others.
kinvara7 | Aug 06, 2011, 12:44 PM EDT
What sort of nonsense is this? Seriously, what sort of lazy foolishness brought this article into existence? I suppose Irish Central thinks it has been a slow-news week in Ireland so they have to fill up the space with this garbage. Ireland has made a major discovery in the Atlantic; named a region of our planet and possibly discovered new species...yet the story was hardly covered by IC. Instead we are being treated to stories like Niall O'Dowd's excercise in speculation and this. The story of the Moytirra Vent field recently discovered in the mid-Atlantic, is a story of discovery and innovation. It was an opportunity to write about Ireland's marine endeavours and Irish companies that are at the cutting edge. I guess that story didn't fit in with the narrative that 'Irish' Central wants to create.
pounder | Aug 06, 2011, 11:23 AM EDT
....and Notre Dame football sucks.
kimmie0 | Aug 06, 2011, 10:17 AM EDT
"luck of the Irish" always meant No luck at all, in my house... or better yet, just when things start looking bright, you'll fall in hole... that's the luck of the Irish.
belcarra | Aug 06, 2011, 09:58 AM EDT
you are so correct on Danniel O' Donnell's music. everytime I hear it I want to puke.
insomniax2 | Aug 06, 2011, 09:51 AM EDT
What a load of bollocks.
pugsmom | Aug 06, 2011, 09:48 AM EDT
My granddad, a Fitzpatrick, used to say,"I'd rather have no luck a'tall, than luck o' the Irish!"
