The Irish have a way with words, whether to express love or dislike. Here are some of the best examples:
1. Money can’t buy love, but better to cry in a Mercedes than on a bicycle
2. Forgive your enemy, but remember the bastard's name.
3. Help a man when he is in trouble and he will remember you when
he is in trouble again.
4. Many people are alive only because it is illegal to shoot them.
5. Alcohol doesn’t solve any problem, but then neither does milk.
6. You can always burn that bridge when you come to it
7. A well balanced Irishman has a chip on both shoulders
8. Always remember the British never remember but the Irish never forget
9. Nothing better than warm words on a cold night
10. A girl is a daughter all her life but a boy is a son until he takes a wife

No one is wittier then the Irish. As Irish Americans we would tell each other the sayings our parents and grandparents would come out with and I wish we had written them down. I still repeat a lot of those gems and it cracks my kids up.

VERY GOOD..I LIKE 2,4,7,8. I HAVE HEARD A FEW OF THEM. I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON THE PROVINCE OR COUNTY. I THINK EACH ONE HAS THEIR OWN LITTLE SAYINGS..

Like BillyBob, I've been Irish for awhile too and have never heard most of these. The daughter, son one is not particularly Irish. I liked seanmac84's cow one, now that has a real Irish country flavor.

Hey....I heard these all my life...perhaps not the Mercedes one,,,,but,,,thought my folks just said whatever came into their heads. They all make sense to me. I never thought about the witicism of them...just normal day to talk in our house....

A favourite of my family (from an elderly neighbour) is: "she's all fur coat and no knickers". Think about it.... It's actually not as crude as it sounds - it means someone who is all about show, who tries to look like they have more than they do, when they cannot afford the basics.

The only thing that surpasses Irish humor is Irish tragedy, Bishop Fulton Sheen.

Number 10 was a favorite of my mom's although she phrased it like this: A son is a son till he takes a wife, but a daughter's your daughter for the rest of her life. Also, although I've never heard the one that referenced a Mercedes (and I mean, how old a saying can it be if it references a luxury automobile), but my mom used to say this one: If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at who He gives it to!

Was this a competition to list the most obscure non-Irish stuff possible? This is Lazy Filler stuff that is far more annoying than entertaining. It is just plain insulting.

Heres a good one when referring to a certain type of woman which is true I think "A bad cow is worse than a bull" :)

These "Irish" sayings are just old chestnuts that surface every once in awhile. They're not only not Irish, they're not witty
stephendoyle | Jun 30, 2011, 09:54 AM EDT
I agree billyBob, and there sure are not many Mercedes driving around Ireland nowdays!!
BillyBob | Jun 30, 2011, 08:58 AM EDT
I have been Irish for a long time now (!) but I have never heard ANY of these sayings being used. I know that you guys have to fill the available space but can't you come up with something that at least sounds slightly Irish? "Better to cry in a Mercedes......" C'on guys, you can do better than that! If Behan were to read rubbish like this yis 'id be for it.
