Operated by the Irish Clans Network (an organisation funded by donations anonymous benefactors), the Great Irish Online Clan Gathering is delving into something within the Irish psyche which has perhaps been overlooked by previous initiatives of the Irish Government – the deep importance of someone’s surname, their very own identity.
The fact that the project is using Facebook in such an innovative way to connect means that so many people who may otherwise never have been aware of the Irish connections within their surname can now establish a real bond with Ireland.
It is this type of forward-thinking approach that can build Ireland’s profile internationally and showcase the rich heritage and culture that has emanated from this island. What about the New Irish? You can't leave them out. You must include sections for the mBongos, the Jaraczevcskis and the Patels, Singhs and Chens. Then it'll be truly Irish!

The irish need a facebook of their own to really connect. Lumped in with all manner of others won't bring the togetherness that the Saxon savaged so easily.

OK guys...as usual, the Counihans are left out again! Granted, we're not a giant clan like O'Brian, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Kennedy or Schwartz, but how about a little recognition for the "B" list Irish? We've got history too!! - at least we're known for our sense of humor. Best to all Counihans everywhere. Keep your collective chins up -- we've got as much to be proud of as the big guys.
