The Irish prophet Saint Malachy has predicted that the next Pope after Benedict will be the last and he will be “Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end.”
The prophecies of the Irish saint Malachy, the 12th century bishop of Armagh have thrilled and dismayed readers for centuries. He has stated there will be only one more pope after Benedict, and during his reign comes the end of the world.
The prediction in full is "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”
Experts say it could refer to an Italian pope who would take Peter’s name.
In 1139, then Archbishop Malachy went to Rome from Ireland to give an account of his affairs. While there he received a strange vision about the future that included the name of every pope, 112 in all from his time, who would rule until the end of time. We are now at the second last prophecy.
His predictions are taken very seriously. As one report states: " In 1958, before the Conclave that would elect Pope John XXIII, Cardinal Spellman of New York hired a boat, filled it with sheep and sailed up and down the Tiber River, to show that he was "pastor et nautor," the motto attributed to the next Pope in the prophecies."

As for the prophecy concerning the 111th pope, Pope Benedict, the prophecy says of him, "Gloria Olivae," which means "the glory of the Olive."
The Order of Saint Benedict is also known as the Olivetans which many claim makes Malachy's prophecies correct. The next and final pope then should be "Peter Romanus".
St. Malachy gave an account of his visions to Pope Innocent II, but the document remained unknown in the Roman Archives until its discovery in 1590.
Many of the prophecies are spot on. For example, the one about Urban VIII is Lilium et Rosa (the lily and the rose); he was a native of Florence and on the arms of Florence figured a fleur-de-lis; Pope John Paul 11 is De labore Solis meaning "of the eclipse of the sun," Karol Wojtyla was born on May 18, 1920 during a solar eclipse.
Peregrinus apostolicus (pilgrim pope), which designates Pius VI, appears to be verified by his many journeys to new lands.
So will Benedict’s successor be the last pope? The Irish seer of the 12th century has said it will be so. Time will tell.

Well, if this (what I think is stupid) set of ''prophecies'' is correct, the lads and lasses at IrishCentral had better make reservations for prolonged stays at their nearest confessional. They have a lot of work to do very quickly.

The Prophecy fulfilled: 1. "Glory of the olive" still resides/sits in Rome as Pope Emeritus, His Holiness, Benedict XVI. 2. The Church has been in a state of persecution and crisis with who knows how much more to come. 3. Pope Francis is "Peter the Roman" by virtue of the fact that he is the first Jesuit pope whose motto is based on the Benedictine motto of 1 Peter - in the same manner as "Glory of the olive" refers to the motto of Benedict. 4. St. Francis is considered the ultimate minder of the flock - it has been said that no one in history was as dedicated as Francis to imitate the life, and carry out the work of Christ, in Christ’s own way. He will "pasture his sheep in many tribulations". 5. Pope Benedict was the first pope to receive the Ring of St Peter after it was re-instated by John Paul II who did not wear the ring. 6. Contrary to traditional custom and belief, Benedict did not destroy his ring as he should have but instead simply "disabled the seal" so he could keep the ring. 7. Pope Francis will now wear the same ring as Pope Benedict enjoining them both to St. Peter at the same time - something that has never happened in the history of the Church! 8. The prophecy of popes 111 and 112 are meant to be taken together and not separately as these events unfold. 9. Pope Benedict as Glory of the olive retired but is not gone and "there will sit - In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church." 10. Pope Francis as Peter the Roman was appointed to "pasture his sheep" in the many tribulations to come... The End!

Even though the article is interesting, in a, kind of, "Dan Brownish" way, it doesn´t take a "symbologist Robert Langdon" to understand that this is pure and absolute nonsense. If one look to the sky on a cloudy day, some people see the forms of the clouds as teddybears or elephants or heartshapes. Other - sadly - see the doomsday coming in a shape or another.

I remember the rumours about Pope Peter when the Conclave was held after the death of Pius XII. The new Pope will be Peter II. Of course, that did not happen. Instead we got John XXIII.

@ NewUser – there is no such thing as a day, a month, a year, or lunar or solar time, or seasonal time in God’s creation. All of these concepts are man-made to try and bring some order to man’s world. I am one of those who do not believe in ‘Time’ as we mortal humans live by it.

I have read and heard of these prophesies of the “last Pope” many times. Erm… except that there is one thing wrong with interpretations of them all: the actual prophesy is that Rome will be destroyed by some calamity or other but that the Pope “will leave Rome walking over the dead bodies of his priests”. In other words, Rome may be destroyed but the Pope and continuing Papacy won’t be.

I've been waiting for this story. Everybody must know that this is the last Pope, according to the prophecy. What a wonderful doomsday scenario! But if you look at things in the church, perhaps it is the last Pope for reasons that have nothing to do with the end of the world.

As neilshog wrote, we have already been assured that nobody knows the date or the hour of the end. For fun and argument’s sake, let’s assume there is some truth to this claim by the Irish Central staff of writers. (BTW, the Olivetans only joined the Benedictines in 1960 and are only one branch of the Benedictine order—they are the ones who accept women and men in the same monastery, so that mkes the claim in the article just a little fishy.) As we follow this line of reasoning, one asks why the predictions ended when they did. We discovered the Mayan Calendar was either wrong or wrongly interpreted. As for St. Malachy and why his visions stopped, I say the cock crowed, the sun rose, it was morning, and he woke up. So his visions ended when they did. Just sayin’.

never knew beans about malachy, but did wonder... recently in Belfast on a Sunday we asked hotel naitre'd(?) where was catholic church in walking distance. He said St. Malachy's, and gacve directions. Recently restrored church with highly ornate plaster decorative ceiling was its claim to fame...

This is fraudulent. Saint Malachy's name was attached to this document in a fraudulent way. It's not his prophecy.

Well, which Pope Benedict would St. Malachy have referenced? I'm guessing there were at least 15 other Popes named "Benedict", Is this Pope not named "Pope Benedict XVI" the sixteenth? Maybe there will be another 10 or 12 Benedicts in the future?
