Missionary nun Sister Mary Beth, a true hero of the Catholic Church

This course had representatives of every race and creed, yet they all rooted for the Catholic nun, whose humility and selflessness was a model for all faiths.  I was moved, touched, and inspired by her work with Child Headed Households (CHH), an organization that cares for children who have become head of their households after losing both parents to AIDS.

She published her experience in a book, AIDS Orphans Rising: What You Should Know and What You Can Do to Help Them Succeed, which can be found on the web site www.AIDSOrphansRising.org.

For the first time in decades, I was intensely proud of the clergy of my church, and my face beamed as I reconsidered my Catholic nature once again.

Though I went to the communications course to improve my leadership skills at work, I unexpectedly found myself resuming a long forgotten conversation with God that we held during my more frequent church attendance.

When I opened my mind and heart to what was going on in Mass, instead of bringing my festering contempt for the collar into the House of God as I had been for the last 10 years, a funny thing happened.

I was inspired to donate to worthwhile causes in the second collection, the retired clergy fund that helped with the medical bills of the dedicated priests and nuns that educated me in my formative years, the religious education foundation, and the mission work of modern day saints like Sr. Mary Beth.

Palm Sunday marks the holiest week in our church’s calendar, which makes the crucifixion of our church officials in the press ironic timing to say the least. Many of the people who communicated poorly will get their comeuppance in the harsh media spotlight, and they deserve all of the pain that they get and then some.

You may be tempted to send a message calling for change in our broken church by withholding dialing down the Easter offering; I know I will.

Perhaps you may want to consider taking that money you saved in the first collection and giving it to a worthwhile cause funded by the second collection? While most women her age are dying Easter eggs with grandchildren, Sister Mary Beth Lloyd and her colleagues are probably spending Easter working miracles in a Brazilian transit terminal with little more than the price of a bus fare.

You can help by making checks payable to Religious Teachers of Filippini and mail to Sr. Mary Beth Lloyd, MPF at Villa Walsh, 455 Western Avenue, Morristown, New Jersey 07960.

Most Catholics (I think) know that nuns have been doing this kind of thing for a long, long time, without attention and glory given to them. There are so many orders of sisters who have done similar things: Medical Mission Sisters (nuns who work with poor women and children as their doctors, nurses and medical personnel), the Maryknoll Sisters, oh, so many.
FINALLY A REALLY GOOD NUN DOING A WONDERFUL SERVICE TO HELP ABUSED CHILDREN. SHE IS THERE ON THE FRONTLINES.

Can this be true? A story on IC that shows the CC in a positive light??? UNPRECEDENTED! -- This website, from its founder to the lowliest wannabe Hollywood trash gossip-monger(and that is one true description), does not fail to present on every one of its issues at minimum 2 or 3 stories meant to attract the worst of the lapsed, anti, ill-informed and proddy Catholic haters. -- The problem is not that 'you report' but rather that there is an infinitesimal attempt at balancing the information with the myriad of stories of Catholic clergy and laity practicing their faith vigorously, even to the point of heroic virtue. -- This, and not rancid scandals which the media keeps on resurrecting in order to discredit the Church and silence its voice in the culture wars, is what your staff emphasizes. -- Your initials IC are only a partial reflection of your philosophy, they should rather be ICCC, for Irish Contra Catholic Cudgel.
And the Catholic Church forbids the ordination of women - what a waste of resources especially when there is such a shortage of priests! My money does not go anywhere near first or second collections - it goes directly to causes for children, This nun certainly seems worthy of my hard earned money. At least it won't be going to fund Bernard Law's plush apartment in Rome. In Boston, the money collected for retired priests went to victims of priestly rapes.
A refreshing story about our Church, for a change! Thanks, Mike!
thanks - the good news seldom hits the headlines
It's good to hear something positive for a change. Thank you for sharing the story.
I have found another great religious order to send money to for the GREAT works they do in the name of JESUS ! Amen Thank you
What a heart-wrenching story! But it opens up a window to the extent of the problem of sexual exploitation in the greater culture and all around the world. There exists unprecedented sexual exploitation of others in many forms everywhere. It is not only the diabolic sexual predators under the guise of the priesthood within the Church...it is the sick pestilence of the greater society. People need to be outraged about child sexual exploitation in all parts of the world, in all jurisdictions of society and begin to change the culture beginning with ourselves. John Paul II's Theology of the Body is the foundation from which we all need to begin to foster a culture of authentic love to put an end to the abuse of others. God must be sorely greived by it all.
This story has warmed my heart. What a beautiful soul, we should all be as selfless.
such a touching article--what is her and her fellow sisters' secret as to seeing the Roman Catholic Church as a viable vehicle in doing the Christian works of our Lord--
AWESOME STORY !!!!
