Good job,Mike.
I don't think the cover up was worse than the crime, actually. I do think that the Church's decades long refusal to admit that crimes had even occurred was repulsive (and still is repulsive). I appreciate that there are many good men and women in the Church, that doesn't excuse the betrayal of basic trust that has happened the world over; it makes it more poignant, in fact. I object to your description that people/journalists are "bashing the Church." They are in fact responding with sincere outrage to the worst provocations you could ever contemplate. Yesterday we learned that over 200 deaf children here in the U.S. were sexually abused by a priest that even Pope Benedict failed to reprimand or hand over to the authorities. Criticizing that isn't "bashing" it's an obligation.
She is a true follower of Christ, and ding God's work on earth. She saved little children from sexual predators when the authority figures(parents)in their lives had lost their moral compass much like the Vatican officials who placed innocent children in harms way over and over again for the "image" of the church.
Excellent article. Maureen Dowd on March 21 in the NY Times also wrote a great story about nuns. As my sister says, "they are the true Christians." They should be running the Church.
