Actually, what allowed NYC to grow was the reduction in the shipping costs of one tone of food from the Western part of the State, most notably the Finger Lakes Region, from $100 to < than $10.

Where does the Illinois/Michigan canal begin and end? Do you know when it was built? Where did the money come from?

They also built the Illinois and Michigan canal,without which the union forces wouldn't have won the civil war.
