Supermarket chain shows which locales sell the most around February 14th

Curious where to head in Ireland if you’re on the search for some romance in time for St. Valentine’s Day? Tesco, of course, has got you covered.

The supermarket chain in Ireland has released what they believe to be the most romantic spots in the country, using sales of chocolates and gifts in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day as their marker.

The most romantic spot in Ireland, judged on Tesco’s sales of chocolates and gifts, is Bailieborough in Co Cavan. Tesco said on Thursday that over one third of all customers in the store pick up a Valentine’s Day treat for their other half in the week leading up to February 14th, however it’s mostly women shoppers doing the gift buying in that spot.

Can’t make it to Bailieborough? Sure head on over to Arklow in Co Wicklow, which comes in a close second. In Arklow it’s the men leading the way, where they purchase more cards and flowers than at any other store in Ireland.

Tesco goes on to round out the top ten most romantic locations in Ireland as follows - Celbridge (Kildare), Edenderry (Offaly), Tramore (Waterford), Nenagh (Tipperary), Kilrush (Clare), Clonmel (Tipperary), Drogheda (Louth), and Naas (Kildare).

Perhaps not surprisingly, it appears the more urban spots are less romantic than the rural. 

The following are Tesco’s ten most unromantic locales in Ireland: Jervis Street (Dublin City Centre), Paul Street (Cork City Centre), Stillorgan (County Dublin), Tallaght (Dublin), Arthur’s Quay (Limerick City Centre), Clondalkin (Dublin), Bloomfields (Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin), Dundalk (Louth), Dooradoyle (Limerick), and Kilbarrack (Dublin).

Commenting on the data today, Modern Matchmaker Avril Mulcahy said to The Journal: “This research has shown that women tend to plan Valentine’s Day more as an event, picking up cards and novelty items over the two weeks leading up to the day, and choosing items such as candles and table accessories to really create a romantic ambiance.”

“Men however tend to stick to traditional gifts such as flowers and chocolates, and tend to buy their cards at the last minute.”
