Life in Ireland has changed dramatically in the past century, transforming from a colony under British rule and battling for independence into a Republic celebrating its freedom and the place it has made for itself in the world.

To highlight the massive differences between the lives of Irish people in 1916 and those in 2016, Irish photography company ProDrone.ie compiled this powerful video charting the evolution of Dublin.

Seen torn apart by the struggle for independence, the city is now captured as a thriving, vibrant capital named by the New York Times as one of the top places to visit in 2016.

ProDrone.ie is a professional Irish drone photography company established to capture the best possible aerial photos and videos in Ireland. Taking archive footage from the Easter Rising, film footage of various screen projects based on the events of Easter week, and drone footage of Dublin in 2016, they created this short film that beautifully captures the incredible history paved into Dublin’s streets that we can take for granted while strolling past the generic shop faces you can find in any other city.

Set to the haunting sounds of Sinéad O'Connor and The Chieftains performing the rousing “Foggy Dew,” you’ll get a whole new appreciation for Dublin’s Fair City.
