Its changed days.I worked in Europe back in the 80's- crossing the frontiers between Holland, Germany, France,Belgium etc and you would have to have held a gun to my head to make me carry an Irish passport (I carry a Brit Passport ).At every checkpoint/airport/immigration anyone carrying an Irish Passport was pulled over for search and checking.Especially by the Dutch and German police/customs etc. guys not exactly famed for their brain power). In those days Irish = Terrorist.A bit like Palestinians nowadays. The saddest case was an American buddy who proudly carried an Irish Passport till he was taken in for for "routine questioning "by German cops.He kept insisting that he was an American citizen which produced the response "Zen vy are you carrying an Irish passport?Vat ar you up to .Confess"When released 3 hours later he vowed never to travel with an Irish passport again.

Hutching...Geez..God Bless You. I attempted to search to no avail, where in Ireland my Great Grandparents were born. Records destroyed in fire in NYC so that is a lost. I finally decided to just get extended visa's instead of becoming a citizen even though I love Ireland. I am 54 and really don't have the energy to deal with all the paperwork.

There are more practical advantages - with an Irish passport/citizenship you can attend a UK university at in-country rates and be eligible for in-country scholarships. ... If you put Dual EU-US citizenship at the top of your resume/vita that will open the door to more interviews with many US and EU corporations.

My father was born and raised in Ireland and died there, so when I wanted to get an Irish passsport, the paperwork was relatively simple. I needed my father's long-form birth certificate, his marriage certificate to my mother, my long form birth certificate from the USA, the passport application and a bank check for the fees.
This was in the 1980's and I was a Washington-based newspaperman, so it got processed more quickly than today.
I keep it and my U.S. passport valid at all times.

Hello, I would like to know if it would be possible to get an Irish citizenship if I have a felony conviction in the United States of America?

It works - but get all the papers together when you are 56, your grandmother was born in 1880 and your parents are dead can be a process that is quite time consuming - especially finding out where your grandparent was actually born.
I have 3 Irish born grandparents and the 4th was called PAtrick Kelly but with immigration, Irish family feuds etc and the 40 year generation gaps it was a challenge.
But I've done it, got my citizenship and now awaiting my passport. I live in the UK and was having to get new US passports every 4-6 years as even with extra pages they were totally full - and the queues at Heathrow. I once couldn't get a landing card to fill in on the aircraft and ended up waiting and hour and a half behind two planes from India.
Remeber though that if you are a US citizen you must enter the US on your American passport.
