While my mum favored the 13 people at the last supper theory, I later learned the king of France ordered the arrest and imprisonment of the Knights Templar on Friday the 13th, I tended to go with that explaination as we don't know what calendar was in use 2,000 years ago.

I could add that it is unlucky to open an umbrella inside the house. It means it will rain on you--figuratively.
