Four-leaf clover: Never show anyone your four-leaf clover or you will receive no good luck

Whether you believe in superstitions or not almost everyone you know takes note when it’s Friday the 13th and is more careful crossing the road, pouring hot coffee or walking down the stairs.

Silly or not it is all in the name of warding off what bad luck might come their way. The Irish are big believers in this kind of caution.

On Friday the 13th some people even take to their beds or refuse to leave the house. Believe it or believe it not this behavior is actually a diagnosed phobia of Friday the 13th called Paraskevidekatriaphobia.

It’s not certain where the superstition about Friday the 13th comes from but one of the most common theories is that there were 13 people at the Last Supper and Christ died on Good Friday, hence Friday the 13th. There are also Spanish, Norse and Old English theories but this is one of the most quoted.

There’s not much you can do about Friday the 13th but there are some old Irish superstitions you can take note of to avoid some bad luck. You never know when they might come in handy to spare yourself a little extra bad luck.

Superstitions on Death

·         If you trip and fall in a graveyard you will most likely die by the end of the year.

·         If you meet a funeral on the road you must turn and walk with the funeral party for at least four steps to warn off bad luck.

·         If you open your front door and are greeted by a magpie and it looks at you. Then there is absolutely not thing you can do. This is a sure sign of death.

Animal Superstitions

·         A black cat crossing your path is very bad luck. To counteract this make a triangle shape using your thumbs and forefingers and spit at the cat through the hold. This method will also work when you accidentally walk under a ladder.

·         If a rooster comes to the threshold of your house and crows then you can expect visitors.

·         If you see three magpies on the road it is very unlucky but if you see two of them on your right-hand side then that it’s good luck.

·         If you kill a robin redbreast you will never have any good luck ever again.

·         If the first lamb of the year is black then someone in the family will die within a year.

·         If you meet a magpie, a cat or a woman with a limp while you’re on a trip it is bad luck.

·         Never ask a man going fishing where he is going.

·         If you find a horse shoe and nail it to the door it will bring good luck. This will not work if the shoe is bought or given as a gift by someone else.

I believe Friday the 13th was the result of the Pope-ordered massacre of the Knights Templar.
I think, after reading all these comments, that I'll get drunk and stay drunk! Then, at least I won't feel all this bad luck coming.
The American version of the knife superstition is that you have to give the person something back in exchange if the gift is a knife. Otherwise it cuts the friendship. So you get back a silver dollar or other coin. Native superstitions I know, an owl hooting or a fox crossing your path or looking at you means you or someone nearby will die. The California tribes won't use owl feathers in their dancing regalia. Some American tribes are particular about how they enter or exit their homes. They want the front door facing east, the direction west means death. Your spirit goes to the west when you die. When the government helped them by building housing communities on the reservations "so they could live like white people", they did not take this into account. So houses faced in all different directions on these geometric blocks and you had some people entering and exiting their assigned house through back doors and side windows as their main point of entry/egress because it was the side facing east.
my mother has a fear, based on superstition, that if any kind of bird flies into your home that you are going to hear of a death. another one is, never give the gift of a new wallet/purse without putting a little money in it.
I own a black cat and he has brought me nothing but GOOD LUCK.
Friday 13th today in Ireland and I won a prize in a draw this evening. Is that bad luck?
In America, a black cat crossing your path is suppposed to be bad luck. Black cats are identified with witches on Halloween.
"Never ask a man going fishing where he is going." How can you tell where he's going then? This article is a load of garbage. These so-called superstions are either not Irish--they're English in origin--or no one in Ireland has ever heard of them. I've checked. Apart from the Friday 13th superstion, which is universal in Anglo-Saxon culture, my Irish informants knew none of the others, except maybe the black cat, whcih any American will tell you also. I love cats, black especially, by the way. Never brought me bad luck. Baloney.
FRI THE 13th WAS ALSO THE DAY THAT, UNDER ORDERS FROM A POPE SO THAT HE COULD STEAL ALL THEIR HOLDINGS, ALL KNIGHT TEMPLARS WERE ARRESTED & KILLED, TO THE LAST MAN.
I always heard in Ireland that a black cat crossing your path was bad luck but in the US, I've heard it's good luck???
I've broken an arm, lost a tooth, and been busted in a drug sting all on Friday the 13th.
When I was a little girl here in he states; my grandmother used to tell me that the gypsies would get me if I wasn't in the house by dark. Last September when I was in Galway; I was walking along the street and a little old lady started talking to me. What did she tell me? Hurry home cause the gypsies would get me! I couldn't believe it!
Boy, have I heard these before. It's really funny. I've got one! It's the truth! Our daughter gave us a black cat about 10 years ago. She was born on Friday 13th. Oh my Lord, she's a banshee! When you feed her she spits ats you. Horrible cat! We still have her though after all these years. We just give her alot of space.
When we were in Ireland they said that a black cat was good luck!?!?!? And if getting wet while doing the dishes means marrying a drunk then I will have to tell my husband to leave :-) !
As a child growing up in Galway I heard all these old stories many times , of course I believed them back then. Not so sure anymore !!!!!
I'm going to stay clear of that lady with the limp!
