I thought all ireland looked like the quiet man until I married a Belfast lad.
In my opinion, a true Irish movie is filmed in Ireland with an Irish cast. It's a disgrace that The Wind That Shakes the Barley is not on this list....hands down, not only one of the best Irish movies made, but one of the best movies of the decade.
Not a big fan of The Quiet Man. Waking Ned Devine is one of my favs.
I wonder why The Wind that Shakes the Barley didn't get a bigger release in the US. It won the Golden Palm at Cannes that year. I have to admit I think The Quiet Man is one of the most over rated movies. I hardly consider it an Irish movie. It is an American movie about an idealized and stereotypical view of what Irish Americans think Ireland should be.
@Edinboron, I have to agree with you "Wind That Shakes The Barley" is one of if not the best Irish movie I have seen.
I love films set in Ireland. Recently viewed the film "Leap Year" and absolutely loved the Irish scenery.
Edinboron... I have emailed Netflix several times regarding this issue. I tried to convey in the most simpliest terms that an IRISH movie is not a UK movie and they need to create an extra link for the Irish genre. I have yet to be replied to....bollocks to them.
I saw "The Commitments". Garbage. I walked out in embarrassment after an hour.
What? No "Wind That Shakes the Barley"? or "Escapist"? Many of those films you selected, while filmed in Ireland, aren't really what I would call Irish movies. "Saving Private Ryan", great movie but not really Irish. Same with "Braveheart". Now a film such as "In Bruges", while not filmed in Ireland is an Irish movie! Written by an Irishman and starring Colin Farrel and the great Brendan Gleason, the snappy dialogue, and mix of drama and humour, has Ireland written all over it. "The Commitments" was part of a trilogy. "The Van" and "The Snapper" are wonderful movies too, they just didn't get as big a release in the States. Now, something I've noticed on Netflix. In the foreign films section, you can search for movies by country, but.....THEY DON'T HAVE IRELAND as an option. India, Iran, Israel, all countries listed, but no Ireland. I fear they are listed under UK! I've inquired of them several times but have heard nothing back. Get on it Irish Central! A little investigative journalism for you.
