Two Clare immigrants who made their mark in 19 centurt America were John Philip HOLLAND who invented the submarine, and Roland CURTIN who established an iron works in PA, married the daughter of a U.S. senator and had a son Andrew Gregg CURTIN, who was Gov. of PA during the Civil War.
Some of my ancestors starved to death in Clare and my family is going to gather there this year for the National Famine Commemoration. Before we go we're going to check online for the best in local dining. :-)
good article, Ms. Walsh... this topic ought to contain another half dozen articles that elaborate some of the themes mentioned above, and I'd hope we'll see them on this site...
It's very intersting to me, as I am almost certain after recent genealogy searches that my great grandfather Chambers was born in Kilrush.
