date of birth: August 31, 1971
place of birth: Dublin, Ireland
Pádraig Harrington started golfing at the tender age of five, benefitting from the unmistakable presence of sports in his household. Though Pádraig, the youngest of five, was born in Dublin, his father played Gaelic football for Cork and was a talented hurler and boxer as well. Harrington was also inspired by his father's love of golf, as his father had even played to a five handicap long before Pádraig became a golf sensation.
After winning the Walker Cup with the Great Britain and Ireland team in the mid 1990s, Harrington went pro and joined the European Tour in 1996. Compared to many other golfers, Harrington turned pro at a later stage than usual, as he had focused on graduating from university with a degree in accounting before focusing on a career in golf.
Though he often came close to victories in European Tour events, he never came first until 2000. Since then, Harrington's career has gone from strength to strength, seeing him capturing the PGA title in 2008, The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008, and even being named Player of the Year multiple times by several organizations. He is also the first golfer to capture two majors in the same year since 1998. Marrying his childhood sweetheart Caroline in 1997, Harrington lives with his wife and their two sons in Dublin.
