Notes This Week:

What’s happening today at the Irish Roots Cafe

1) ‘County Wexford Genealogy and Family History notes’

has just been upgraded with a full color 19th century

map of the county, which should help researchers.

2) I’ll be at the Dublin, Ohio Irish Festival shortly. It’s our

12th year or so at the genealogy tent with books, cd’s and

consultation ! We’ll be launching our genealogy CD and

several more in our new set, right at the festival !

We may even offer free DNA swabs to acquaint you with

the procedure.... Be sure and stop by the tent.

3) I am also going to try some Sean Nos singing, maybe at

the cultural tent Friday night... if not I’ll be singing at the

genealogy tent when the crowd subsides.....

Irish County Genealogy Book of the Month:

1) County Tipperary, Ireland, genealogy & family history.

http://www.irishroots.com/id4543.htm

Description:

Volume 25 of our Irish Families Project, and this book is

only on County Tipperary, Ireland. Here is some info

taken from the book above:

Most Numerous Tipperary Familes

The 19th century birth index finds the following families

most numerous in the county

(variant spellings after each name have been added) :

Ryan.....Ryane......Riane

Maher.....Mahair.....Mahar

O'Brien.....O'Bryan.....Brian

Kennedy.....Kenedy.....Cannady

Dwyer.....Dwier.....Dwire

Hogan.....Hogane.....Hogain

Hayes.....Hays..,...Haes

Gleeson.....Gleason.....Gleasane

McGrath.....McGraw.....MacGra

Walsh.....Welsh.....Welch

Kelly.....Kellie.....Kelley

Lonergan......Lonorgan....Lanorgan

Most of the old Irish names can have the

Mac or 'O' before the name dropped or

added at will. Additionally many old Irish

names were translated or 'mistranslated'

into English from the original gaelic.

Two more basic resources for the 19th

century are the Tithe Applotment Books,

and Griffiths Survey of Ireland. They are

available at the National Library of Ireland

and elsewhere.
