Danny Venezia as Brendan Behan

A legendary Irish rebel writer at his best inspires the critically acclaimed one-man sensation A Broth of a Boy, the staged life chronicle uniting the scripts, stories and song of notorious IRA renegade Brendan Behan. Arguably the most colorful Irish writer of the twentieth century, A Broth of a Boy brings to light Behan’s stormy career, famed for his boisterous behavior as much as for humor, power and compassionate writings. Based on Behan’s own words, this Irish cultural experience is adapted for the stage and directed by Richard Smithies, produced by Céad Míle Fáilte Productions from September 25th through October 7th, at The Arsenal Center for the Arts Black Box Theater, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown.

Based on Behan’s writings, A Broth of a Boy stars spirited actor Danny Venezia in this electrifying production set in four different bars, portraying Behan at critical points in his turbulent career, resulting in his untimely death at the age of 41. On a return engagement to the US after heralded touring in the United Kingdom, A Broth of a Boy speaks to the audience’s core, allowing a full in-the-moment experience in a true-to-life Irish cultural perspective of Behan’s time. Captivating scenes recount a bar crawl of tales through shootings, prison, wild success, passion and defeat.

Channeling Behan’s natural charismatic singing talent, Venezia takes authentic Irish storytelling, humor and song and delivers them heart and soul through a huge repertoire of Irish tunes interspersed throughout the performance. In powerful baritone voice, Danny performs songs ranging from traditional Celtic ballads like ‘Roisin Dubh’, to the rebel fervor of ‘The Bold Fenian Men’ and the music-hall rowdiness of ‘Take her up to Monto’.

Venezia captures the brilliance, beauty, and boldness of Ireland and its people in this powerful solo traveling performance, earning vast accolades in the US and abroad. Raised in the housing projects of Irish dominated Charlestown, the former lightweight boxer “portrays Behan with such conviction it’s hard to imagine the man himself being any different.” - The Standard Times
