Irish musician Declan O’Rourke to Play Café 939

Declan O’Rourke is coming to the Red Room at Café 939 on Thursday, November 8 at 8:00 pm. Based in Galway, O’Rourke is considered one of Ireland’s top singer songwriters and has earned the respect of his peers from Bono to Damien Rice.

Declan released his debut album in 2004, Since Kyabram. Galileo (Someone Like You), his debut single, has been covered by numerous artists including Josh Groban and performed by Paul Weller and Chris Rea. His two subsequent albums Big Bad Beautiful World and Mag Pai Zai, were also hits in Ireland.

He’s opened for such acts as Snow Patrol, The Cardigans, Teddy Thompson and Paul Brady. He also appeared on a BBC series in August with Allison Krause and Gerry Douglas.

Since his last tour of the US earlier in Feburary, he’s been busy writing and performing. He played with Bono, Damien Rice, Bob Geldolf and others at the Electric Burma concert honoring Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyin in Dublin. He also recorded a duet with Kate Rusby, England’s top contemporary folk singer. ‘Bring me a boat’ will appear on her upcoming album in October. They will also be performing together at London’s Royal Festival Hall in London.

Paul Weller of the Jam said this about Declan in April’s Mojo: "He writes the sort of classic songs that people don’t write anymore, songs that sound like they’ve been around forever . . . Listen to Galileo, which is possibly the greatest song written in the last thirty years."
