Hope from the Ocean: the Irish Servant Girl in America

On May 5th, The Eire Society, Charitable Irish Society and the Forbes Museum presents “Hope from the Ocean: the Irish Servant Girl in America”, a lecture by Professor Maureen Murphy.

Professor Murphy is the Joseph Dionne Professor of Curriculum and Teaching at Hofstra University. She was a senior editor of the prize winning Dictionary of Irish Biography. She edited new editions of Aseneath Nicholson’s Annals of the Famine in Ireland and Ireland’s Welcome to the Stranger. Professor Murphy was co-director of the New York State Great Irish Famine Curriculum Project. She was awarded an Honorary Degree from the National University of Ireland for her work in Irish Studies in 2011.

May 5th, at 1:30 pm, the event will commence at Fontbonne Academy. A reception with refreshments and Irish traditional musical entertainment will be held at the Forbes Museum on Adams Street afterwards at the conclusion of Professor Murphy’s lecture.
