Goldfish have preferences to music...of course!

Did you know that your goldfish has preferences to music?

Well, according to a new study conducted at Keio University premier Japanese institute for learning, goldfish respond differently to the music of Bach and Stravinsky.

The report is scheduled to be published in the October edition of the journal Behavioural Processes.

In the experiments, scientists led by lead researcher, Kazutaka Shinozuka , dropped a common food ball into a fish tank and played musical pieces from Bach while the animals ate. The team was surprised to find that once the fish were accustomed to eating their meals with Bach playing in the background, they were hooked. When the scientists introduced the same food ball with Stravinsky’s music - the fish refused to eat.

Johann Sebastian Bach, was an eighteenth century German composer, while Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky was a Russian composer of the twentieth century.

Although the Russians strongly claim Stravinsky to be their own, the composer moved to America later in life.

There are indications that those in diplomatic circles are concerned about the timing of the release of this new research.

One observer, speaking under the condition of strict anonymity explained the dilemma this way:

“This study could not have been released at a worse time. The Russians are trying to lead the world in diplomacy, especially in the Syrian crisis. They need the world to trust them so that the weapons of mass destruction will be removed from Assad’s hands . But, if the world learns that goldfish are repulsed by what comes natural to Russians, namely the music of Stravinsky ….well it could have a big impact on the entire process.”

Another Russian source wishing not to be identified commented by saying:

“Although I have no direct knowledge thus far, I Know Russian President Vladimir Putin will be made aware of this so-called research and will be outraged. The Russians defeated the Germans in World War II at great cost. I wouldn’t be surprised to see goldfish banned in Russia after the dust settles. The Russian view will be that the research is deeply flawed”
