The showbiz matriarch insists the troubled actress – who recently completed a court-ordered rehab stint for drug and alcohol abuse – will never be completely free of her demons, but at the moment it’s a battle she is winning.

In an interview with ‘ABC News’ today (18.02.11), Dina said: “I believe that Lindsay doesn't drink anymore, and I think it's gonna be a lifelong struggle with addiction. But I think she's gonna be OK.

"She's a young girl struggling. You know, she's not perfect ... She's learning as she goes, but she's learning under a microscope, so I can't even imagine how that is.”

The 48-year-old TV personality realised Lindsay, 24, was going off the rails when she was just 18 and says her problems began when she moved to Los Angeles in 2004 and got involved with a hard-partying crowd.

She added: “I knew early on, I just didn't tell anyone about it. It was a personal situation … But I never thought it would be like this – that the media would be so crazy. I really never thought it would get to this level. It's been really hard on my family, harder than anything."

Lindsay is currently battling a felony grand theft charge after being accused of stealing a $2,500 necklace from Californian jewellery store Kamofie & Company.
