The Irish community in Woodlawn are hosting a fundraiser for County Monaghan man Shane Hoey who was recently diagnosed with stage four intestinal cancer.

A native of Killanny, Carrickmacross, Hoey came to New York in 1999 to follow his dreams. He joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local Union 608 and has remained an active member ever since.

In 2003, Shane became the proud father of Jack. For the last nine years, Jack, a keen swimmer, talented musician, little leaguer, and boy scout, has been Hoey’s life.

Hoey continues his fight against his disease for the both of them and is focused on healing with an incredibly positive attitude. However, it's hard for Shane not to worry about the financial impacts of his diagnosis and treatments.

To lend a helping hand, the community has organized a fundraiser event for Hoey at Rory Dolan’s on January 20th, at 1pm. The lively event will include Irish dance performances and music from Celtic Cross, Narrowbacks and the McLean Avenue Band among others.

The fundraiser will also include an auction and a raffle with prizes such as a signed guitar from David Bryan of Bon Jovi, a Donegal jersey signed by the All-Ireland team, tickets to the Rachael Ray Show and much more.

The fundraising committee have also organized a five-hour sponsored run by Tom McGrath starting at 10am, on the day, at Cortlandt Park and ending at Rory Dolans at 3pm.
