In a surprise move Catherine Greig, girlfriend of mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is considering pleading guilty and avoiding a trial.

The Boston Globe
reports that Greig’s lawyers have indicated that she wants to plead guilty without a plea bargain, essentially ruling out that she would turn in evidence against Bulger.

She would face up to five years in jail if convicted on charges of aiding and harboring a fugitive.

Greig’s trail was set for May 7, while 82-year-old Bulger, wanted for 19 murders and criminal conspiracy, has had no trial date set yet.

Greig, who is 60, was a dental hygienist before she set off for life as a fugitive with Bulger.

The two lived incognito in a rent-controlled apartment for 13 years, just a few blocks from the beach in Santa Monica, California.

Greig has been held without bail in a Rhode Island detention facility since her arrest.

Steven Davis, the brother of one of Bulger’s victims, Debra Davis, who was allegedly strangled by Bulger in 1981, said he was okay with the deal.

“If that’s what she wants to do is plead guilty, what else can you do but accept that?”

“Get rid of her [case] and we can all focus on him, Whitey,” he told the Boston Globe.
