The journal of Samantha Lewthwaite, otherwise known as the 'White Widow', has revealed insight into the mind of the world's most wanted female terrorist suspect.
Lewthwaite, who grew up in Banbridge, Co Down, and is the the widow of 7/7 London suicide bomber Jermaine Lindsay, is believed to be the mastermind behind the Nairobi shopping mall massacre. The mother of three is currently on the run as the most wanted female terrorist suspect in the world. Interpol has issued a 'red notice' for her arrest.
The Belfast Telegraph reports that Lewthwaite's diary was found in a raid of her home, an exclusive villa in the Shanzu area of Mombasa. It is believed she lived there with her children while planning the Nairobi shopping mall attack.
The entries in the journal tell of the love she had for her husband, whom she calls her "beloved," who killed over 50 people when he blew himself up on the London Tube. She writes that se believes she is blessed to have been married to a shaheed (martyr).
She recalls the answers her two young children gave after her husband asked them what they wanted to be when they were older.
"Both had many answers but both agreed to one of wanting to be a Mujahid." she wrote with pride. A Mujahid is an Islamic military fighter.
The entries also include what appears to be the start of a book she was writing, called "I Want To Be A Mujahid."
The diary extracts are part of a discovery by Sky News of a Kenyan intelligence report suggesting that Lewthwaite is a key figure in the al Shabaab terror network.
In the 35-page document she is identified as a "logistician" within a six-person terror cell, which the Kenyans believe was co-ordinated by Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir, under the alias of Ikrima. The document gives a breakdown on the terror group's extensive reach and also indicates clear warnings issued over eight months ago that a "Mumbai-style attack" was being planned on the Kenyan shopping mall.
The Belfast Telegraph reports that intelligence sources believe that Lewthwaite is now married to the leader of the cell co-ordinated by Ikrima, a man called Fahmi Jamal Salim.
