A survey carried out on behalf of an RTE game show has found that 40 percent of Irish people have been unfaithful to their spouse. RTE is the government-owned national broadcasting service.

Connacht emerged as the “most faithful” province in the country.

The survey was carried out on behalf of the game show series “Who Knows Ireland Best?” With relation to infidelity, the survey found that 41 percent of people admitted that they secretly checked their partner’s email and text messages. Also, 14 percent admitted they’ve ended a relationship using a text message.

When it comes to marriage, 34 percent of Irish are traditionalists and believe it’s proper for the man to ask his girlfriend’s father permission before he proposes.

The game show examines the Irish attitudes to other moral issues.

The Entertainment Commissioning Editor for RTE, the Irish state broadcaster, Bill Malone said the show “is a fun and entertaining look into the habits, minds and morals of Ireland today."

Some of the other facts that came out of the survey include:

-          Seven out of ten Irish people believe in God while 41 percent believe in ghosts.
-          48 percent of Irish people surveyed said they passed their driving test first-time round.
-          26 percent can’t change a car tire.
-          12 percent haven’t read a book in the last year.
-          60 percent admit to having pulled a ‘sickie’ from work.
