An eyewitness, who survived the Al Shabaab attack on the Westgate shopping center in Nairobi, said a woman who looked like the County Down-born “White Widow” Samantha Lewthwaite attempted to shoot her with a machine gun during the invasion.

Although some reports have varied claiming that Lewthwaite was not among the terrorists a senior Kenyan anti-terror officer on Tuesday night revealed that police had received many witness accounts of a female attacker resembling the widow of 7/7 bomber Jermaine Lindsay.

Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta also confirmed he had received intelligence reports suggesting the County Down woman was involved.

A shop worker from the Westgate mall, who gave only the name Caroline, gave her account of her grueling ordeal to the police. Caroline said that she say a “pale-skinned woman” with long dark hair, spraying bullets from an AK-47 and believes that it was Samantha Lewthwaite.

The current death toll of the terrorist attack lies at 67 but is expected to rise as the Kenyan authorities sift through what remains of the high-end mall. The siege began on Saturday when militants entered the mall slaughtering men, women and children with assault rifles and grenades.

The eyewitness, Caroline, said “She was high up but not far from me, close enough that I saw her looking along the floor where I was until she saw me.

“She stopped firing at me for a moment and looked away and I jumped up and ran around a corner and that’s how I escaped.

“She had pale skin and long black hair, and was wearing a baggy black top. I can’t remember very much, but I remember she had pale skin.”
