Post-Christmas revelers are bracing themselves for another storm after Ireland’s weather services issued a second warning in 48 hours.

Gusting winds which caused travel havoc in the lead-in to Christmas Day are now set to return.

Met Eireann, the Irish government’s weather service, has warned motorists to watch out for falling trees and debris after issuing an amber warning for weather conditions which have the capacity to impact significantly on people in affected areas.

A Met Eireann spokesperson told the Irish Independent newspaper: “Southeast winds will strengthen during the day and it will become very windy or stormy once again in the evening and night, with severe or possibly damaging gusts.”

“Tonight will see winds gusting to speeds of 80mph, especially in coastal areas.
“There will also be heavy rain or sleet, which will clear to heavy or thundery showers of rain or hail overnight.”

Temperatures are expected to drop to below freezing in parts of the country.
The West of Ireland was worst hit on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as up to 30,000 homes were left without electricity.

Ferry services continue to be disrupted with high speed services between Dublin and Holyhead cancelled by operators Stena Line and Irish Ferries.
