Police in Scotland have confirmed that a body found on Wednesday has been identified as missing Irishman Barry Doherty.

The 25-year-old Donegal man, had been missing since last week. The body was discovered at Thornley Dam, Paisley, just a mile from Doherty's home.

A spokeswoman for the police said "Relatives are aware and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

His sister Cathie had been in Scotland, for the past week, helping police with their investigation. She told the Irish Independent she was devastated by the loss of her "beautiful" brother. She also thanks those who had come to the aid of her family during this difficult time.

Doherty, from Carndonagh, was last seen at his home on Monday July 15 in the Glenburn area of Paisley, southwest of Glasgow, RTE reports.

He left his home at around 11pm that evening wearing a blue t-shirt, navy or black colored shorts and grey canvas shoes.

His 25th birthday was last Thursday and he failed to make contact with family or friends.
