In the wake of the closure of the New of the World and the resignation of Rebekah Brooks, the publisher of the Wall Street Journal, Les Hinton has stepped down from his position on the very day that Rupert Murdoch issued a public apology for his corporation's involvement in the phone hacking scandal.

Les Hinton who has been a journalist and executive for over 50 years has served as part of Murdoch's empire since its roots in Australia. As the FBI begin to probe News Corps alleged phone hacking of 9/11 victims and their families it seems that he is attempting to save his US assets 27 broadcast licences and 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Hinton headed up NI, the holding company for the British newspapers, including the News of the World and the Times, which are at the center of the phone hacking scandals. There are some who question whether Hinton know about the corruption and payments to the London police officers. Even being aware of such action would be seen as a felony under the Foreign Corrupt Practices act in the US.

On Thursday Rupert Murdoch met with the family of Milly Dowler in an attempt to limit the damage cause by the scandal. The British public were not ready to forget with cries of "shame on you" greeting him as he emerged from the meeting, according to the Independent.

The News of the World had hacked into Milly Dowler's cell phone messages when the 13-year-old girl was missing in 2002. When her message box was full they deleted messages in her phone. This led her family to believe that the teen was still alive. It also influenced the police investigation. Dowler was later found murdered.
