Rory McIlroy has become the butt of Twitter jokes after wearing a ‘trendy’ check suit to the home of Manchester United on Saturday.

The Irish golfer paraded the Claret Jug won at last month’s British Open before United’s opening Premier League game of the season.

But it was the cut of his suit that gained most attention for McIlroy on a day when United’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea battle his attire for the headlines.

Ryder Cup team-mate Ian Poulter even claimed from his Florida residence that McIlroy had robbed his check suit.

And diehard United fan McIlroy wasn’t shy to bite back at Arsenal fan Poulter in a Twitter war of words.

After meeting United legends including European Cup winner Bobby Charlton and former manager Alex Ferguson, McIlroy tweeted a photo with the Claret Jug from the United boardroom.

He wrote: “What an honour to present the Claret Jug at Old Trafford today and so special to meet some legends of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton.”

Arsenal supporter Poulter quickly picked up on the fact that McIlroy’s suit was identical to one he wore to Wimbledon this summer.

Poulter tweeted: “Hey you can keep your Claret Jug but can I have my suit back please Mr @McIlroyRory I thought something was missing.”

Four time Major winner McIlroy then poked fun at Poulter’s lack of success in the big ones when he replied: “Sorry @IanJamesPoulter you must be mistaken... this suit was only available with the claret jug!”

After trading insults over McIlroy’s red socks and United’s failure to win, Poulter had the last laugh according to ESPN.com when he wrote: “You do realize they are the only trophies that will be paraded at Old Trafford this season.”

McIlroy has yet to respond as United fans come to terms with an opening day defeat under new boss Louis Van Gaal.
