Robbery appears to be the motive behind the assault on Gary Halpin,a young married man from Co. Cork, found badly beaten in Dorchester. He remains in serious condition in hospital.
It has now been revealed that his ATM card was stolen during the assault and that money has since been taken from the account.
The attack happened just a few blocks from the home the 33-year-old shares with his wife and three-year-old daughter.
He is the son of Kevin and Theresa Halpin from Cobh in Cork and has three brothers and a sister. He worked as a freelance graphic designer in Boston.
The Boston Police Homicide Unit is appealing for witnesses to the brutal assault that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, August 18th. Halpin has been living in Boston since 2006 and was only minutes from his home at Adams Village when he was discovered with potentially life-threatening injuries by a State Trooper.
Whilst the exact circumstances are unclear, some details have emerged about the events leading up to the discovery of Halpin’s unconscious body. According to the Boston police department report, a group of people had flagged down the trooper as he traveled by Gallivan Blvd. in his marked cruiser. The group proceeded to relay information about a man that had been seen staggering in the area and whom they believed had been beaten up.
The trooper continued further down Gallivan Blvd. when his attention was drawn to the local car park, near the corner of Gallivan Blvd. and Adams St. The trooper observed the father of one who attempted to walk towards the trooper’s vehicle.
Due to the extent of his injuries, the Irishman could only walk a few steps before collapsing on the ground. An EMS unit was called and they quickly transported the Cork native to the Boston Medical Center for further evaluation. Boston police officers were informed on arrival by the medics that the graphic designer was in grave condition after obtaining injuries to his head and his wife was notified.
Despite the Gallivan Blvd. area of Dorchester being canvassed by police with possible crime scenes located and photographed, the circumstances that led up to this horrendous attack on the Adams Village resident are still unclear. Boston police at this stage are remaining tight-lipped but have issued an appeal for anyone who was in the area or who many have any information to come forward to help them solve this crime
Residents and businesses alike in the predominantly Irish neighborhood are still in shock that their quiet streets have once again been the location of a brutal attack that has led to a man fighting for his life. Adams Village is considered by many to be one of the safest parts of Dorchester with a very close-knit community but this recent attack has only served to remind the locals of the tragic case of Ciaran O Conghaile, an Irish man who was murdered as he walked home in the same area in October, 2011.
