Sunny days in Ireland have ended as heavy rain and thunderstorms move in over the country for the coming days.

“The unsettled weather will continue right through the Bank Holiday weekend and into next week,” a spokesperson for Met Eireann said on Wednesday, July 31.

Even with bouts of rain, however, the temperatures will remain relatively warm and humid. Temperatures won’t be as warm as the unusually hot ones in preceding weeks, however.

“Tomorrow and Thursday we should expect more widespread, persistent rain. It could get really heavy in places with a risk of further thunderstorms.”

The forecast for rain in Ireland comes as parts of the country are still cleaning up after last week’s heavy rainfall. The Irish Independent reports that Letterkenny General Hospital will be closed for the next few weeks after its new 20m A&E unit was flooded. Clerys’ Department store in Dublin remains closed as well after heavy rain damaged the store’s interior.

“Looking further ahead, sunny spells and scattered showers are forecast for Friday and Saturday. There may be some long dry spells, particularly in inland spots.”

Looking to next week, Met Éireann has forecast heavy rain on Monday, but Tuesday and Wednesday look like they’ll be bringing dry weather.
