President Obama appeared on ‘The View’ on Tuesday, where he discussed his endorsement of gay marriage as well as being quizzed on pop culture.
Speaking about his announcement last Wednesday, that he supports gay marriage, he said he admires people who speak their minds.
"I think it's important for everybody in my administration to feel like, you know, we want to be disciplined, we want to make sure we're getting the message out there but at the same time, on issues of principle, you know, I always admire people who go ahead and speak their minds," the President told the hosts of "The View" in a segment that was taped Monday.
He also revealed his office had considered breaking the news on “The View”.
"It was a possibility. It was," he said. "We had been discussing it for a few weeks and we thought, what are the formats where we could talk about it not just as a policy issue but as a personal issue and all of you came to mind."
The Democratic President, who is seeking re-election this November, declined to say whether he would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 federal law which defines marriage as the legal union of a man and a woman.
"My Justice Department has said to the courts, we don't think the Defense of Marriage Act is constitutional," the President said. "This is something that historically had been determined at the state level and part of my believing ultimately that civil unions weren't sufficient."
Put on the spot, the 44th president was asked a series of pop culture questions. When asked which Kardashian was married for 72 days, he correctly answered Kim.
"Because he was a ball player," the President interjected. “I know he was a ball player. That's how I know, from watching basketball."
Obama was unaware that Jessica Simpson had given birth to a baby girl and was also stumped when he was asked about the controversial sex book "Fifty Shades of Grey," which millions of women are reading. With a puzzled look on his face, Obama admitted he didn’t know the answer, but joked "I'll ask Michelle when I get home."
Tuesday’s show marked Obama’s fourth appearance on “The View”, his second since taking up residence in the White House.
