Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott may have made the most awkward St. Patrick’s Day speech ever.
Clasping his hands in a very uncomfortable fashion the beleaguered leader said the Irish knew how to sing and down a pint of Guinness and that was all good -- oh and they helped build Australia.
Which was all the video really talked about.
Local Irish were too not to happy about Abbott’s greeting, with a businessman telling the Irish Times “There are so many good stories of Irish people in business in Australia, Mr Abbott’s lack of awareness of any of that is astonishing.”
Abbott, who was born in England, said "It's been said of us that the English made the laws, the Scots made the money and the Irish made the songs”.
“I’m sorry I can’t be there to share a Guinness or two, or maybe even three, but like you I do rejoice in St. Patrick’s Day."
The Prime Minister wore a green tie for the video which will be shown at The Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce and the Lansdowne Club in Sydney as both are holding sold-out St Patrick’s luncheons on Friday.
