Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has criticized Irish prime minister Enda Kenny, saying it would be “a disgrace” if he had told a Northern politician that Stormont was “not our business.”

Earlier this week, UUP leader Mike Nesbitt said that the Taoiseach told him “the Irish government’s role would not touch on internal Stormont issues.”

Speaking at the Cáirde Fáil dinner over the weekend, Marin said former taoiseach Albert Reynolds would never have said such words, TheJournal.ie reports.

“Neither he or any Fianna Fáil Taoiseach or minister who followed him would ever have agreed that the affairs of Northern Ireland are not our business. According to the Ulster Unionist Party leader this is the very assurance he was given by Enda Kenny last week.

“If it is true it is a disgrace and a direct abandonment of the dynamic central to every major achievement of the peace process.”

The Fianna Fáil leader also said that there would be no “private deals” in the next election because of new rules and said the party had ‘got Alan Shatter out of a job.’
