U2 singer Bono has claimed capitalism is destroying the fight against poverty and claimed the real criminals wear ‘skis not ski-masks.’
The rock legend made the startling claim at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.
Bono said: “Some of the criminals around here are not wearing ski masks, they are wearing skis.
“Capitalism can be a great creative force but it can be a destructive force. It is not immoral but it is amoral, we need to give it some instructions.
The Irish Times reports that Bono told world leaders that the business community needs to boost the fight against world poverty by raising ethical standards in their respective sectors.
Sharing a stage with British leader David Cameron, Bono was speaking on the proposal to replace the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDG) when it ends in 2015.
The report says the MDG included targets for reducing poverty, hunger and child mortality and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
The new program will be known as ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ and the program will aim to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030 by renewing targets not achieved in the first round and adding new proposals, such as fighting corruption.
The U2 singer claimed the MDG was a ‘shite pro name’ that put people off.
He also said that the proposed new name – ‘Sustainable Millennium Goals’ - sounded like ‘a bad heavy metal band.’
Bono added: “Even my own band, though really supportive” of his campaigning against poverty, only have to hear MDG and you can see their eyes rolling.”
The U2 frontman suggested the UN hold a worldwide competition to find a better title for the new program.
He said: “We want ownership from the wider population.”
