Although NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly has repeatedly said that he has no plans to enter politics the latest Quinnipiac University poll showed her to be the frontrunner.

The veteran cop came out ahead of fellow Irish American City Council Speaker Christine Quinn with 17 percent, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz with 14 percent and Comptroller John Liu with 10 percent. Kelly received a whopping 25 percent despite the fact that he isn’t even running.

These results are similar to the Q poll from July. However it seems that “Occupy Wall Street” and the police clashes with protester has done little to tarnish Kelly’s public standing.

Pollster Maurice Carroll said “Who should get the top job when Bloomberg finishes his third term? Police Commissioner Ray Kelly leads the pack, although most politicians doubt he’ll run.”

Experts believe that these results are only due to name recognition as the elections are two years away.

Earlier this year former Mayor, Ed Koch, told a crowd at the Downtown-Lower Manhattan that he would back the Police Commissioner if he decided to run. Koch said he would support Christine Quinn if Kelly did not run.

The polls also showed that Kelly’s job approval is only slightly down, in comparison to July’s results.

However current Major Michael Bloomberg’s popularity has dropped considerably, in comparison to the result during the threat of Hurricane Irene.
