The esteemed Irish physician Dr. Patrick J. Boland will be honored for his dedicated fight against cancer at the Team Trinity/Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Benefit on Friday, May 11 at Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway.

The banquet will be held in the Good Time Room. Cocktail hour starts at 7 p.m., followed by dinner and musical entertainment until midnight.

Boland is a native of Monasterevin, Co. Kildare, and is a senior member of the Orthopedic Oncology Service Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, where he specializes in the surgical management of malignant and benign tumors of the bone, including those of the spine and pelvis, and soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities. He also specializes in the management of cancer of lung, breast and other organs when they spread to the bone.

With the generous assistance of the Irish community in New York, Boland has been able to assist in the education of Irish doctors by affording them the opportunity to study at Memorial Sloan Kettering and return to Ireland with newly acquired expertise.

Boland is also involved in extensive research activities, including ongoing clinical research in sacral tumors and in the assessment of quality of life in patients with metastatic bone cancer. He has also authored and co-authored numerous chapters and scientific papers on surgery for tumors of extremities and the spine.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England, and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

The name Team Trinity was developed by organizers when Eileen Collum Mannion was asked by the Westchester chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to be one of their Champions of Hope.

Though the challenge was daunting, it was still one that could be accomplished by assembling a group of Irish Americans with a great desire to help. Team Trinity also came together to reverse any negative portrayals of the Irish immigrant and Irish Americans.

In conjunction with the banquet, a souvenir journal will be published and an auction held on the evening. Deadline for receipt of ads and payment for tables is April 30.

The Team Trinity banquet chairperson is Ursula McIntyre of Empire City Casino. Other committee members are as follows -- journal chairman, Eugene Collum of the Heritage bar and restaurant, Guss Hayes of the Guss Hayes Band; Dermot Henry of the Dermot Henry Band; Joanie Madden of Cherish the Ladies; Eugene Brophy of Brophy Fruit and Vegetables; Rory Dolan of Rory Dolan’s bar and restaurant; Seamus Clarke of JP Clarke’s saloon; Agnes Delaney of the Aisling Irish Center; Rose of Tralee Erin Loughran; R.J. Puma of Anna Artuso Pastry Shop, and Eileen Collum Mannion of Eileen’s Country Kitchen.
