A new health campaign is urging men to get checked for cancer. According tho the Blue September campaign, 1 in 3 Irish men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

The international campaign is in its third year in Ireland, and is being supported by VHI healthcare, which says it has seen an increase in the treatment of male specific cancers among its customers over the years.

Prostate cancer makes up for 94 percent of the insurer's male cancer claims, reports TheJournal.ie.

As part of the campaign, VHI is providing 200 free health consultations to men who talk about the cancer concerns they may have.

“After prevention, early detection of cancer is the key to successful treatment," says VHI's medical director Dr Bernadette Carr.

"Awareness of the symptoms and signs of common cancers, self-examination for testicular cancer and seeking medical advice for anything untoward could go a long way to reducing the cancer mortality rate in men in Ireland."

To find out more about the campaign, check out the Blue September website.
