Members of the NYPD are planning a fundraiser for MBTA police officer Richard ‘Dick’ Donohue, 33, who was injured in the shootout with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The married father has a seven-month-old son and has been a member of the MBTA Transit Police Department for three years.
The MBTA officer was shot in the leg shot and lost a massive amount of blood. Another police officer, Sean Collier, was killed.
To show their support police officers based in New York are rallying to raise funds for the injured cop.
“The Boston guys in particular, we want to make sure we show support up there,” NYPD Lt. Conor Wynne told the Boston Herald.
Wynne, together with John Byron, are both Boston natives and are organizing the fundraiser May 24 at Manhattan’s Legends Sports Bar.
Donations for the charity auction include signed Micky Ward boxing gloves, New York Rangers items, and a NASCAR car door.
Byron, who lost a partner during Sandy said he wanted to pay back Boston cops for the support they showed New York then.
“When this happened back home, it scared us,” Byron said. “It was an absolute feeling of helplessness. We figured the only way we could do anything was to try raise money.”
Wynne added: “We want to make sure they don’t have any financial worries over the next couple years.”
