Ireland has voted in favour of new rights for children – despite one of the lowest turn-outs for a referendum in the history of the state.

Just over 30 per cent of the electorate bothered to take part in Saturday’s referendum designed to give children a voice.

The proposed change to the legislation looks certain to be passed as counting continued on Sunday afternoon.

Campaigners believe the Yes vote could enjoy a 2-1 majority by the time all votes are counted.

The Irish government’s Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald has welcome the Yes vote.

Minister Fitzgerald said: “This is an historic day for the protection of children in Ireland.

“The decision of the people will give a voice to children and ensure that their rights were better protected

“I’m delighted they have supported this change to the constitution.”
