New Irish ship to join Gaza flotilla

A vow to take on Israeli blockade

Freedom flotilla ship, MV Rachel Corrie

A new committee has been set up to raise funds for a second Irish vessel to sail in a second flotilla to Gaza.

Nine died in the last attempt to reach the Gaza Strip by sea when Israeli Commandos stormed a Turkish boat involved in the attempt to carry aid into the coastal territory.

"The [new] committee brings together a wide range of organizations which are determined to work together to ensure there is a large Irish component in the Second Freedom Flotilla,” said one of the new flotilla’s main organizers.

"We believe that a breach of the sea blockade by the planned flotilla will fatally undermine Israel's illegal siege of Gaza -- the ships will be bringing aid, but the primary purpose is to break the siege," he said.

Israel has eased its restrictions of what aid can pass into the Hamas-controlled Strip since the last flotilla attempt, and has agreed to a UN-led inquiry into its actions earlier this year which provoked international outrage.

A spate of Palestinian rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip into Southern Israel in recent days has renewed concerns that an escalation of violence in the region is imminent.

The Israeli Air Force recently targeted sites in the tiny coastal strip as part of its reaction to the rocket-fire.

"The attack is in response to the rockets and mortar shells that were fired at Israel and hit the southern Negev communities during the past weekend," said a spokesperson for the Air Force.

A Turkish passenger ship at the center of the violence during a deadly Israeli navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was towed out of a port in Israel last Thursday.

Legal moves are apparently underway to have the Irish vessel - The Rachel Corrie - released from the Southern Israeli port of Ashdod.

Oh WoundedKnee! please be careful what you say. I an taking it from your username you're at least part Indian, right? If so, you of all people should be against the Palestinians trying to steal Israel's rightful land! You're taking a stand against God Himself when you stand against His Israel. Since you're and American Indian, I wouldn't expect you to understand our close relationship to Jehovah God, but we Irish have dwelt with and gained life from Him far too many times to get a few coins in our pockets and turn from Him and His people. Ireland! consider carefully what you're doing and take God's side!
LOL ... another boat to be sunk or impounded? Let's just go fishing instead.
WoundedKnee: We're throwing money(aid)at a lot of Muslim countries that hate our guts but like our money. The Israelis aren't knocking down our buildings with our own planes and blowing up innocent Americans in New York, D.C., and Pennsylvania. It's not the Israelis that are making bombs to blow up New Yorkers on the streets and subways. The Israelis and the Palestinians have been fighting for thousands of years. I don't think either side is "Virtuous." It's been a game of tit for tat. After the extermination of 6,000,000 of their people and the slaughter of their athletes, I guess the Israelis are rather paranoid.
willieboy: Why doesn't the United States stop bankrolling Israel? That's the biggest interference of all, and every dollar spent on israel is a dollar not spent at home.
JimThompson: No sensible person believes what "Israel said". The Israelis are incorrigible liars. They steal the supplies once they land them. Anyway, what right do they have to stop ships on the high seas? Surely you don't support murder and piracy?
Why can't you people keep your noses out ou other peoples business. Enough already...
I personally think Irish organizations should stay out of the conflict between two warring groups. They are only asking for more Irish men and women to be killed needlessly. I believe that Israel said that the ships could copme into one of their ports and they would ensure that the health and comfort articles would reach the peoples of Gaza.
BishopSean; Yes, breaking the blockade will be an important step forward for peace and justice. The blockade is already tottering, because it is so cruel and unjust. One more push should see the Israelis confounded.
Northern Ireland is already free thanks!
Free Northern Ireland before you but into any one else's business.
Fugget that gig - seek freedom in thy own land. Save the world souls so eager to express caring for others who were so good to send sandwiches during Great Hunger. More money for the black babies as was the ritual at school for 80 or more years.
Will breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza likely bring more peace or more war to the region? None of us can afford to be wishful thinkers in this matter.
I'd like to support this. Anyone know where I can send a few dollars?
