Michael D Higgins says Ireland has a lot to learn from Latin America

I am happy to see that President Chavez has been fairly comfortably reelected in Colombia. I hope he will devote his term in office to dealing with some of the social problems that he has failed to tackle. Criminality remains unchecked, with a murder rate higher than anything we have. Simple social services such as garbage collection have fallen apart, according to my information. I haven't been in Venezuela for many years, but I do remember with pride the monument in central Caracas to the Irish Legion which helped free the country from colonial rule. Chavez is a long way from being perfect, but he sure beats the corrupt opposition.
