A Clare based action group has warned a British energy firm that fracking of a natural gas field off the west coast will not proceed — "not now, not ever".

According to the Irish Examiner, London-based Enegi plans to apply for an exploration license over the coming weeks. The independent oil and gas group currently operates in Ireland, the UK and Canada.

Clare Fracking Concerned spokeswoman Róisín Ní Gháirbhith said: "What Enegi Oil need to realize is locals value their health, water, environment and, most of, all their children a lot more than any short term jobs or financial gains."

"We strongly encourage Enegi to stop wasting its time and energy investigating the possibility of carrying out fracking in our county.”

Ní Gháirbhith emphasized: "Not now, not ever will this highly controversial, destructive method of extracting gas be allowed by the people."

A study by the company showed that there is up to 3.86 trillion cubic feet of shale gas in the site, south of Doonbeg and north of Kilrush in Co. Clare.

Enegi’s preliminary findings stated that "given the maturity, thickness and buried depth of the shale, the whole area under the option remains prospective for shale gas."

The extraction method is known as fracking (hydraulic fracturing). Fracking involves creating fractures in rocks by injecting fluid into cracks to force them further open. The larger openings allow more oil and gas to flow out of the formation. The practice has been the source of much controversy worldwide.

Enegi chief executive Alan Minty said the company was looking forward to exploring off the coast of Clare.

"Our findings and the report from Fugro have further endorsed management’s belief that the Clare basin has a strong best case investment profile. The whole acreage appears to be very prospective and we are particularly excited by the area at the centre of the existing seismic grid which we have defined as high grade."

Mairint: do energy companies who carry out the fracking in Aus. at the same time own the rights to public drinking water. Hence being able to manipulate the price of drinking water upwards by virtue of spoiling it somewhere else? Uisce Eirinn..
i know little about fracking, except i have read many negative reports about its destructivenature and potential to destrot water tables ,i have hated what has happened to ireland in the last 30 years all the factories ,building etc etc,yes i know, jobs growth, done a lot for ireland all that growth, aspecially as its best and brightest have HAD to leave their loved ones and homes, and been replaced by foriegners, tell them to frack off,
the job job excuse is always the "don't you want to improve yer lot" way to fool the poor sods into poisoning themselves and/or have sink hole outcomes .. oops there goes the cliff gone under the sea.
Porick - with all due respect, you have no idea. First, it's not water that is displacing the gas. Second, the wholesale destruction of the land surface is terrible to see. Third, the artificial lakes that are created to hold the fracking chemicals. Better wake up guys, like I said go gave a look first hand. Until then you can have no idea, never mind having an informed opinion.
You should hear what has been done, is being done, here in Australia. Whole areas poisoned, people sick, water system destroyed, vast tracks of food producing areas dug up, private properties invaded by foreign companies while the police protect the companies. Children with constant headaches, nosebleeds, hospitalized. Homes worthless and the people not compensated for the loss of their land. It is heartbreaking to hear these people describe their situation. Who allows this happen? The traitorous governments, both state and federal. Such disastrous treatment of the people of this country can not be called "improve their station" or "job potential". To drive through, or fly over, areas are like desolate moonscapes.
What is wrong with these people? Do they not want to improve their station in life ??
Let's hear it for the Luddites. The fracking is a solution for all those global warming alarmists. Afraid that melting ice bergs will innundate coast lines? Fracking displaces gas and oil with water. The wells are in the Ocean. The water used in the fracking will decrease the ocean level. Hoorah!
For a country in desperate need of jobs, one would think the Irish would be glad of this potential job creator.
In addition to the chemicals, the destruction to the landscape is horrific. If you have never seen it you can have no idea.
Leave it to the Centrists, and the English will be digging for Gold at the End of your Rainbow !
I have seen what fracking can do and it it is frightening. Beware.
precautionary principle must apply, NO FRACKING IRELAND.
Ah yes Co. Clare a county known for its abundance of energy. Loads of truf, espically in the Burren, exclusive use to the electric generated by Ardnacrusha, the nuclear power plant at Lisdoonavarna (what really makes the 'heat' at the matchmaking festival), a methane plant linked to every cow in every parish. Its not as if they 'need' any of this 'fracking' gas. Read John Fay's blog in this publication today!
fraking will cause the disappearance of the cliffs of mohar within a few years with this stupid caper - don't be surprized
What is being seen here in the US especially in the Eagle Ford shale in Texas is that there are other ways of fracking. New style are being developed that don't need chemicals to frack. Ireland needs money and jobs and this is one way to change perception levels. Think about it!!!
