Former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley is among the frontrunners for Ambassador to Ireland, according to Democratic Party sources.

It is not expected that incumbent Dan Rooney will return.

Daley, 64, was a key figure for Obama during his first term and has also been mentioned as a possible contender for governor of Illinois in the 2014 contest.

Daley’s brother, former Chicago Mayor William Daley, could also be a contender but it is expected he will not go forward. The Daley brothers trace their roots back to Waterford.

Speculation in an Irish newspaper that Bill Clinton might be interested has been dismissed by Clinton personnel.

Obama appointed 59 ambassadors who were not career foreign policy officers. Of those, 25, including incumbent Dan Rooney, were from the ranks of his big fundraisers and supporters.

Two Obama fundraisers have strong Irish connections, Terry McAuliffe, former Clinton confidante, has declared for governor of Virginia in 2014.

Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, who was a former ambassador to Portugal in the Clinton era, has remained very active in the Irish arena through the American Ireland Fund.

Washington lawyer Mark Tuohey, a leading Democratic Party supporter, is also in the mix as could be Carol Wheeler, Irish liaison for Obama and leading Irish American figure in Washington D.C. Former Senator Chris Dodd, who owns a house in Galway, has also been mentioned.

Murphy why is that are you following the guidelines or what. That they do watch what you are posting.
I think we THE IRISH IS FINALLY ARRIVED.
Two more things (1) A national political fact and (2) a Chicago political fact. (1) The most common path to the presidency has been either as state governor or successful general (who keeps his pants on). (2) In Chicago the path for that would be from a small job into a middle job and then maybe governor. The small job is US Congressman. The middle job city alderman or mayor and the big job, governor. Our current mayor and our most recent governor more or less started that way, as US Congressman. As have others before them. The next governor race will be crowded on the Democrat side, what with the current governor Quinn, and Lisa Madigan already jockeying. Then add Daley and our Mayor Emmanuel is facing a crowded field of people with organizations and power behind them. So now maybe one of them gets to slide off the screen with a cushy job? Who'd have expected that?
MY COMMENTS AGAIN REMOVED!
Well, the play on that is local politics, as Tip O'Neill correctly observed. The deal at hand in are the Governor of Illinois (reserved for the current Attorney General, who happens to be daughter of the State's legislative king) and the still unrevealed ambitions of Rahm Emmanuel, currently Chicago's mayor. You may recall his former stepping stone roles as US Congressman and White House chief of staff.
'Daley’s brother, former Chicago Mayor William Daley', I thought the former Mayor of Chicago was Richard Daley? Anyway, it is highly unlikely that Bill Daley would be interested in the US Ambassador's job in Dublin. The man is young and used to being at the center of the storm politically. He apparently has ambitions to be Governor of Illinois, which is more likely. Bill Clinton certainly wouldn't want to be holed up in the Phoenix Park. Chris Dodd is a far more likely person to be offered the position.
