Aidan Folan, 21, from St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights was recognised in a video by his fraternity brothers as responsible for the beating and robbing of 56-year-old Dina Perez, who was mugged on March 9 in a Brooklyn subway station.
The video showed Folan allegedly pummeling and kicking Ms. Perez at the 18th Avenue F station at around 2:40 a.m. on March 9. The suspect was discovered because of the hoodie he was wearing at the time which sported the fraternity’s Greek letters, Alpha Phi Delta, and the custom lettering of his nickname ‘Stugotz 27’ which means ‘Testicles’. A fraternity brother recognised the hoodie and immediately called NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hot line, giving detectives Folan’s address which eventually led to his capture and identification in police lineups.
“Being human beings, we felt compelled to do that,” the fraternity member who recognized Folan said. “I think any human being would feel compelled. We were just appalled,” reports the New York Post.
“Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy go out to Ms. Perez as she recovers from this ghastly act ... The alleged actions that Mr. Folan is being charged with are heinous and completely repugnant to the membership and tradition of Alpha Phi Delta fraternity. The video shows brutal and cowardly actions against Ms. Perez.”
Speaking on behalf of his fraternity, the frat brother who recognized Folan said that he is embarrassed that Folan was part of their brotherhood and called for harsh punishment, also saying, “If he’s found guilty, we will immediately expel him — not that it’ll mean anything to someone who did that.”
