A new NYPD cop has received the badge number of her father, who died trying to rescue people from the twin towers on 9/11.

Erin Coughlin's father Sgt. John Coughlin, was an 18-year old department veteran who served with the Emergency Services Unit and lost his life as a first responder at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The 27-year-old was given her father's shield number when she graduated from the Police Academy on Friday with 1,158 other recruits.

Erin, who is one of three, said she was proud to honor her heroic father's legacy by wearing his badge No. 3751 on her chest.

I know he was looking down and was proud of me,” Erin told the New York Daily News. “It was kind of surreal that here I am standing here taking the same oath he did almost 30 years ago.”

Her mother, Patty Coughlin, is happy to see her daughter follow her late husband onto the force.

“It’s an amazing day,” she said. “I am very proud of her. She worked very hard for it.”
