Democratic Mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn has called for a TV ad which attacks her campaign to be pulled from the air, as she claims it’s factually incorrect.
The 30-second ad, which is scheduled to run for three weeks, was funded by political committee NYC Is Not For Sale, which is made up of numerous left-leaning labor groups including NYCLASS, an animal rights group dedicated to banning the horse and carriage industry in New York City.
“She wants you to think that she’s a progressive,” a male narrator says, smoke swirling over an empty table and chairs, “but on the issues New Yorkers care most about, she is always on the wrong side — on living wage, her flip-flop on paid sick leave and term limits. All that’s clear as the smoke lifts is her political ambition.”
The group held a press conference on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday to denounce Quinn’s mayoral bid.
The New York Times reports the group have pledged more than $1 million to the campaign and spent $250,000 for the initial advertising.
In response to the ad, Quinn released a statement decrying NYC Is Not for Sale as “a SuperPAC made up of special interests,” conducting “an all-out effort to undermine New York City’s public campaign finance system.”
“I don’t care who the ad is about, I don’t care who the ad is from,” Quinn told reporters on Tuesday.
“We have no place for this kind of independent public expenditure in New York City.”
Quinn’s campaign attorney, Jerry Goldfeder, also disputed the ad’s claims in a letter to Time Warner.
“Although opponents of a candidate often resort to fanciful broadsides, facts must not be fabricated or distorted,” Goldfeder wrote.
He added: “Your station need not air the subject ad. If you choose to do so, however your station bears responsibility for its content.”
