A winner for Cork: 'Real capital' is only Irish destination named to Top 10 must-see cities for 2010

The Irish city of Cork has made the Top 10 list of must-see cities in the world.

Cork - often referred to as the "real capital" by Corkonians, won a spot in the World's Top 10 for its youthful energy, sophistication and great restaurants.

It was the only Irish destination to make the coveted list by travel bible "Lonely Planet."

"Cork is at the top of its game right now: sophisticated, vibrant and diverse, while still retaining its friendliness, relaxed charm and quick-fire wit," say the folks at "Lonely Planet."

"Its city centre crackles with youthful energy. That's thanks in large part to award-winning University College Cork, which each year pumps out new graduates -- and therefore new life, enthusiasm and ideas -- into the city."

"Lonely Planet" Travel Editor Tom Hall said the recognition of Cork was long overdue.

"Cork has been in Dublin's shadows for far too long, it has emerged as a fantastic destination in its own right with great restaurants, galleries, bars and shops as well as stunning scenery on its doorstep."

Cork's stablemates in the Top 10 include Charleston in the U.S., Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Cuenca, Ecuador; Istanbul, Turkey; Kyoto, Japan; Lecce, Italy; Sarajevo, Bosnia; Singapore and Vancouver, Canada.
